Sketching an Old Firehouse – Plein Air painting

James Gurney paints a firehouse in Hyde Park, NY using gouache and watercolor over casein.

To paint urban architecture in gouache, James Gurney starts with a perspective drawing, then lays in big tones in transparent watercolor and works toward the finer details. In this case he makes big revisions in the perspective and the sky color halfway through.
