DRAWING a portrait painting after Rubens
Showing the drawing and the start of the underpainting.
For this painting, or master copy, I use Raw Umber and Titanium White for the underpainting, and start the drawing off using a brush and pure Raw Umber.
I could sometimes use Burnt Umber, as would Peter Paul Rubens, but here I thought I would have a go with Raw Umber so that it would be consistent with the later underpainting.
The baroque masters – people like Velasquez and Rubens all used something like this method and the colours I’m using when painting portraits.
It’s all good fun having a go. I hope you enjoy the video and please comment and share!
