Which pencil to use to achieve deep tones – Phil Davies

Using a normal graphite pencil for your darkest areas could result in a shining effect which ruins your tonal values. You could use a charcoal pencil to achieve a beautiful deep black tone but graphite and charcoal don’t work very well together. In this video Artist Phil Davis will show his solution to this problem. Since charcoal doesn’t stick on graphite he uses a special pencil, the Staedtler Mars Lumograph Black.

Graphite shine can interfere with the entire look of your pencil drawings, especially if you’re aiming for a photo-realistic style. Many artists use carbon or charcoal pencils for the darkest values but this can be difficult to blend with graphite. In this video, Phil Davies takes you through the pencils he uses to eliminate graphite shine in his pencil drawings.
