I often tell my plein air workshop students that they’ll be half the artist outdoors that they were in the studio, but that after some time painting outdoors they’ll be twice the painter when they return to the studio.

Here’s a good example of a quite pedestrian plein air piece being reinvented in the studio into something more dramatic.

It’s also a good testament to painting the same subject several times to get more comfortable with it.
