How to draw white fur with soft pastels

This is a time lapse of this week’s tutorial for my Patreon. In it I wanted to show you how I draw white fur.

Very often beginner artists use white, black and different shades of gray. But this makes the image look flat when working in color.

I use very few pure blacks and whites in my work as adding color not only makes your work look a lot more interesting, it makes it look more believable and adds volume, so that your subject doesn’t look flat on the paper.

Also, I will show you how to draw eyes so that they appear expressive and dimensional, instead of simply looking flat and having an appearance of stickers on the animal’s head.

For this portrait I used Canson MiTeintes paper, the smooth side, and added some willow charcoal and charcoal pencils to the soft pastels.

You can find the reference photo on my Patreon. I have followed the suggestion of adding the photo to the video, hope it is more comfortable to see and understand the whole process.

Thank you! 🙂
