12 Tips for Realistic en plein air Painting – James Gurney

Plein air painting video tutorial. In this video James Gurney will give you 12 tips to achieve realism in your painting. He shows is process painting a nice little composition with watercolor and gouache.

James Gurney sketches of a pile of snow along a country road using watercolor and gouache. He starts his tutorial with transparent color, applying the paint wet with big brushes, and gradually shifts to a more opaque approach, using drybrush effects to capture the texture of the gravel road. He uses gouache thickly for the highlights and accents. Gouache and watercolor squeezed out from the tube can be used in combination for any kind of plein-air painting or urban sketching. It’s the addition of white that turns watercolor into gouache.
