This video is a sort of roadmap through the perilous journey of learning to draw figures. Learning life drawing is a confusing and difficult process, with a wide range of challenges to overcome. Hopefully this video will help you feel like your struggles are a normal part of the process.
You’ll see that at the end, I conclude that learning to draw is not really a 5 stage sequence but a cycle. We’ve got to keep circling back through and working on our fundamental skills.
In the video, I should some artwork in the ‘creative’ stage – the first one is by Hokusai, then there’s a Van Gogh you probably recognise and a painting by Pierre Bonnard. I also showed a John Singer Sargent watercolour for a second too.
