PORTRAIT OF AN ICON MAKER – Adrian Gor

Gor, Adrian. “Portrait Of An Icon Maker,” Documentary Film, 30 min. Spectrum Research Repository, Concordia University, 2012-2015.

DESCRIPTION: Part of my doctoral research-creation project, this video documentation shows how I build a sort of monastic, Byzantine relationship with a wood-panel icon. The video documents different stages involved in the process of icon making: carving the wood, making the glue to join the wood panels, covering the icon board with a cotton fabric and applying the gesso ground, polishing and making the egg yolk emulsion, and finally painting the icon. All these activities are taking place in different locations in Montreal, Canada, and India. There is a sound component to this video that is associated with different key moments in the process of icon making. I composed the sound based on the chants that I recorded in Eastern Orthodox churches.
