This is part 3 of my 5″x7″ landscape painting demo. The previous layer was done a week prior and now the surface is dry to the touch. This stage of the process is referred to as “first painting” – a layer of paint all about modeling detail, which is an evolution from the block-in that describes shapes and colors more specific to the construction of elements in the scene. The goal of the first painting stage is to establish form, structure, and value without rendering fine details.
This video demonstration features commentary. The footage is edited to remove brush cleaning breaks I took along the way. Nearly every brush stroke is included for those who wish to follow the whole process.
